How Many Classic Minis Were Made?

An official figure of around 5.38 million classic Minis were produced between 1959 and 2000, making the original Alec Issigonis-designed Mini the most successful British car of all time.

Many of these classic models were produced at the Longbridge plant in Birmingham, a key manufacturing plant for the classic Mini throughout the 41-year lifetime of the small car. Manufacturing would also be assisted by overseas markets and plants, helping to steadily increase production numbers over the first couple of decades.

Notably, production expanded to locations such as Japan, Spain, and Australia, ensuring the Mini's global popularity. By the end of its production run, the Mini had cemented its status as a cultural and automotive icon worldwide.

With these figures in mind, it's clear that the production of the classic Mini evolved through several iterations, each contributing to its overall success and cultural impact.

The MkI and MkII versions like the Austin Mini/Austin Seven/Morris Mini Minor laid the groundwork for the Mini's enduring popularity, while later models like the Morris Mini Traveller/Countryman/Mini Clubman and MkIII-MkVII series helped cement its status as a staple of British vehicle history.

The production of Cooper and Cooper S models, known for their performance and racing pedigree, further built on the Mini's legacy, proving that small cars could also deliver big thrills.

How Many Classic Minis are Still Around?

Out of all 5.3 million of the classic Minis made since production began in 1959 and ended in 2000, it is estimated on The Mini Forum that around 23,368 are still registered as licensed, with an additional 49,762 recorded as SORN (Statutory Off-Road Notification), bringing the total to 73,130.
