Classic Mini Bodywork

Bodywork

The Classic Mini bodyshell is a monocoque design where the outer panels contribute to the overall structural rigidity of the car, it is not a separate chassis with bolt-on panels. This means that corrosion in structural areas directly compromises the car’s strength and safety. The bodyshell underwent thousands of minor changes across production, and with those changes it is inevitable that some compromises have had to be made to avoid offering several different bodyshell specifications for each year. The Mk IV bodyshell available through MGOC Spares covers models from 1976 to 1990, plus the Cooper carburettor limited edition of 1990. Key features of this specification include a rubber-mounted front subframe, an egg-shaped rotodip aperture in the centre of the upper bulkhead, and cooling slats for the radiator in the left-hand inner wing. The roof cantrail accepts the 1985 onwards flush-fitting interior lamp rather than the earlier bulkier type, if fitting the earlier lamp, an adaptor plate is required. Once the bodyshell is painted, the threads of all captive nuts and studs should be cleared of paint before fitting out commences. Corrosion Areas The Classic Mini bodyshell is susceptible to corrosion in several well-known areas, particularly around the front and rear subframe mounting points, sills, floor sections, A-panels, front valance, wheel arches and the rear battery box area. Subframe mounting point corrosion is the most safety-critical concern, these points carry the weight of the engine, gearbox and suspension and their condition should be inspected regularly. Repair panels for all common corrosion areas are available, allowing localised deterioration to be cut out and replaced without the need for a complete bodyshell. Body Panels Replacement panels include front wings, rear wings, front and rear wheel arch sections, sill panels, floor sections and repair panels, A-panels, front valances, boot floor sections and subframe mounting repair sections. Accurate panel fit is essential on the Mini, because the monocoque construction means that structural panels contribute to the overall rigidity of the car, poorly fitted panels can compromise structural integrity rather than simply looking wrong. Doors, Bonnet and Boot Door skins, complete door assemblies, bonnet assemblies and boot lid assemblies are all available. Door hinge types changed across production, and door furniture, handles, locks and window mechanisms, differ between earlier and later models. The bonnet and boot release mechanisms, stays, catches and seals all changed at various points during production. MGOC Spares Range The MGOC Spares Classic Mini bodywork range covers complete bodyshells (Mk IV specification), individual body panels and repair sections for all common corrosion areas, front and rear wings, sills, floor sections, wheel arch sections, A-panels, front valances, boot floor sections, subframe mounting repair panels, door skins, complete door assemblies, bonnet assemblies, boot lids, door hinges, bonnet and boot hinges, stays and catches, bonnet and boot seals, and all associated structural fixings.
