Accessories Braking

Braking

The Braking Accessories catalogue covers the cross-model upgrades and consumables that improve, restore or simplify braking-system work on a classic MG. Where the dedicated brake sections under each model cover the model-specific master cylinders, discs, drums, pads and shoes, the Accessories section is the home for items that serve multiple models or that are best understood as upgrades rather than replacements, servo kits, stainless caliper pistons, brake lubricants and the specialist brake tools. Servo Kits Many classic MGs were not fitted with brake servos as standard, particularly in the earlier years of production and on home-market specification cars. A servo kit provides bolt-on vacuum-assisted braking that dramatically reduces the pedal effort needed to lock the wheels, without changing the fundamental feel of the system. The kits are designed around proven Lockheed and Girling servo units sized to the master cylinder bore and the brake circuit of the target car. For the MGB, the servo kit can be retrofitted to chrome-bumper cars that left the factory without servo assistance, restoring the lighter pedal that later cars enjoyed. For Midget and MGA applications, the kits are particularly useful on cars used in modern traffic where the original unassisted pedal feels heavy by comparison. Installation is straightforward, vacuum take-off from the inlet manifold, a mounting bracket in the engine bay, and plumbing into the existing brake circuit between the master cylinder and the calipers. Stainless Caliper Pistons Stainless Caliper Pistons replace the original mild-steel pistons in the front caliper with stainless-steel components that resist the corrosion which is the primary cause of stuck calipers on classic cars. The original pistons corrode in their bores over decades of varied use and brake-fluid contamination, eventually seizing and dragging the disc or refusing to retract properly. A full set of stainless pistons fitted at the same time as a caliper rebuild, new seals, dust covers and bleed nipples, gives a corrosion-resistant front brake assembly that should not require attention again for the working life of the car. The stainless pistons are stocked in the correct diameters for the MGB, MGC, MGB GT V8 and Midget caliper patterns. Brake Lubricants Brake Lubricants cover the high-temperature copper and ceramic greases used during a brake rebuild. Copper-based brake grease on the back of the pad shims dampens vibration and eliminates the squeal that often follows a fresh pad fitment. Ceramic brake grease on the caliper slide pins keeps them moving freely without picking up brake dust. A light film of the appropriate grease on the leading and trailing edges of brake shoe webs allows the shoes to seat properly in the backplate without binding. Brake cleaner and degreaser, also stocked in this section, allow the bare metal of disc and drum surfaces to be properly cleaned before the new pads or shoes bed in. Brake Tools The Brake Tools section, also accessible through the Tools catalogue, covers the specialist tools that simplify brake work, caliper rewind tools for cars with handbrake-operated rear calipers, brake-line flaring kits for owners making their own pipes, drum-brake spring tools, brake-shoe-adjusting tools and the disc brake piston-spreaders needed when fitting new pads to thicker discs. A complete brake refresh on a classic is straightforward, methodical work; the right tools turn it into a satisfying job rather than a frustrating one.
