Alec Issigonis designed the Classic Mini’s interior around a single principle: every cubic inch should serve the people inside it. Across the catalogue scope from 1976 to 2000 the cabin grew steadily more sophisticated, gaining padded dashboard rails, a switch panel housing, a full-width fascia on later cars, three-point inertia reel seatbelts, leather steering wheels, the optional veneered or alloy dashboards on later limited editions, the pre-tensioner seatbelt arrangement of the 1997-on MPi cars and a driver’s airbag on the very last cars. Identifying which generation of cabin your car was originally fitted with is the starting point for ordering interior parts.
Cabin Generations
The most important interior identification points for parts ordering are the dashboard arrangement, the gear lever and gear knob, the seatbelt mounting arrangement and the steering wheel. Cars from 1976 onwards use internal-hinge doors with wind-up windows, conventional interior door handles and the rod-change gearbox linkage. From the late 1970s the dashboard gained a switch panel housing, and by 1984 the standard switchgear arrangement was settled. The 1997-on MPi cars introduced a modified main floor with pre-tensioner seat belt mountings, and a driver’s airbag steering wheel arrangement appeared on the very late 1996 to 2000 cars.
Dashboards
The Classic Mini dashboard is one of the easiest places to make a personal mark on the cabin. Original-specification fascia panels and shelf mouldings are available for both painted and trimmed-finish dashboards, with switch panel cut-outs to suit the original switchgear. Beyond the original specifications, a range of veneered and overlaid replacement dashboards is available, Genuine Burr Walnut, Charcoal, Brushed Aluminium and Carbon Fibre overlaid panels, that fit the standard fascia aperture and transform the cabin’s appearance. The veneered options have been popular with restorers and modifiers since the 1980s and are still the most-asked-for cabin upgrade.
Door Furniture
The interior door pulls, handles, latches, regulators and trim differ between the 1976 to 1979 wind-up window arrangement and the 1983-on revised arrangement, and between the 1976 to 1996 doors and the 1997-on side-impact-bar doors. Interior door handles are available in black for 1976 to 1996 and 1997-on (with side impact bar) specifications, plus colour-coded versions in Prussian Blue, Bitter Chocolate, Coffee and Granite for the late 1980s and 1990s coloured-trim cars, and an alloy interior handle for the 2000 Cooper Sport. Door lock controls, finishers, regulator handles, bezels and centre plugs cover both the 1976 to 1979 and the 1983-on wind-up window arrangements.
Gearknobs and Handbrake
Gear knobs across production cover the original 1976 to 1980 standard knob with white-highlighted gate pattern, the 1980 to 1985 plastic-insert type, the 1986 to 1996 specification, the optional wood gear knob from 1992, and the 1996-on leather gear knobs in Red, Prussian Blue, Porcelain Green, Black, Light Stone Beige and County Green. The 1998-on Cooper limited editions used an alloy gear knob. Handbrake levers are available in standard form and with Black, Green or Beige leather grip, matching the leather gear knob options for an authentic period coordinated cabin. Handbrake gaiters and the full range of handbrake hardware complete the lever assembly.
Switch Panels
Switch panels finish the centre of the dashboard around the heater, light, wiper and ancillary switches. Replacement switch panels are available in original-specification finishes and in Burr Walnut, Charcoal, Brushed Aluminium and Carbon Fibre to match the equivalent dashboard overlay finishes for a coordinated cabin upgrade. Switches and switch panel mounting hardware are listed separately under the Electrics category.
Carpet and Trim
Complete moulded carpet sets, footwell carpet, parcel shelf carpet, boot carpet and trim panels cover the full cabin. Carpet sets are available in colours and qualities to match the original factory specification of each model and limited edition. Door trim panels, A-post trims, B-post and C-post covers, parcel shelf trims, headlining and seat covers are listed within the Carpet & Trim child category, with the correct version matched to body style (saloon, Cabriolet) and original colour scheme.
Seatbelts
The Mini’s seatbelt arrangement evolved from the original simple lap belt through static three-point belts to the modern inertia reel three-point system used on later cars, and finally to the pre-tensioner belt arrangement on the 1997-on MPi cars (which use a modified main floor with additional seat belt mounting reinforcements). Front and rear inertia reel seatbelts, static belts, mounting brackets and the full range of associated hardware cover all production variants.
