Electrical > Ignition

The ignition system is the most consequential single area of the electrical specification on a classic MG. A weak spark, a failing condenser, worn distributor points or perished HT leads all produce running issues that defy diagnosis until the underlying ignition fault is identified, and the cost of putting an entire ignition system right is modest compared with the time spent chasing the symptoms of a tired system. The Ignition section gathers the components needed for routine service, for performance upgrades, and for the conversion of original points-ignition systems to modern electronic specifications. Service Components The service-component side of the section covers the items renewed during a normal ignition service, spark plugs in the correct heat range for each engine, distributor points and condensers for cars still running original points ignition, the distinctive red rotor arms (covered in their own sub-section, with the history that surrounds them), and the silicone-cored HT leads that connect the distributor cap to the spark plugs. Each component is matched to the specific application, the heat range and reach of the spark plug, the points specification of the distributor, the lead length and connector type of the HT set, and the right combination keeps the original-specification ignition system running at its best. Performance Upgrades The performance side covers the upgrades available beyond standard service items. Performance coils (covered in their own sub-section) deliver higher spark energy than the original Lucas equipment, producing a more reliable spark across a wider operating range and supporting the demands of tuned engines. Electronic ignition unit conversions (covered in detail across the Accuspark, Lumenition and Sparkrite sub-sections) replace the points-and-condenser arrangement inside the original distributor with a solid-state trigger that eliminates points wear, removes the need for periodic gap adjustment, and produces more accurate timing across the rev range. Performance distributors with re-curved advance characteristics (covered in the Performance & Electronic Distributors sub-section) match the ignition timing to modified engine specifications. BL Ignition Keys and Supporting Items The BL Ignition Keys sub-section covers the replacement keys for the various lock barrels used across classic-MG production. Where keys have been lost over the years, where the locks have been changed and matched key sets are no longer available, or where a new owner inheriting a car wants to consolidate the multiple keys that may have accumulated, replacement keys cut to the appropriate code restore convenient single-key operation. The technical team is available to advise on the right key specification for a specific lock-barrel code, and on the wider range of ignition-system specifications across the classic-MG range.
