Lucas Classic

Lucas invited us to attend their recent Hill Climb at Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire on Saturday 22nd June set in the bucolic surroundings of the Malvern Hills. Blessed with some dry weather we set off early from our Cambridge HQ to arrive at the venue for 9am, which we found bathed in glorious sunshine.  After a quick pit stop comprising strong coffee and a tasty breakfast bap we joined the driver briefing, presented by the course clerk.

The meet comprised a heady mix of classics, with Aston Martins, XKs, E-Types, MK2 Jags, MGs, Austin Healey’s, 60s Fords, Land Rovers, Austin Healeys with a smattering of pre-war, race car and specials in attendance awaiting their turn on the hill, looking resplendent in Shelsely’s period paddock.

The morning session got off to a good start at around 10:30, light entertainment followed, with a breathtaking low-level, aerobatic display from a spitfire, resplendent in D-Day markings. The courtyard was humming with live music, bar and café in full tilt.

It was great to see our friends at Practical Classics, SNG Barratt, HCVA and Paddock Speedshop. Venturing out of the paddock, we met so many wonderful owners with their cherished classics, who had come to spectate.  We chanced upon a particularly nice 1970 Austin Sprite with a fine autumn leaf interior.  As the owner’s first car, we could see why they could never let it go.

Hill Climbing offers a great way into motorsport. For more information check out https://www.shelsleywalsh.com/
