Classic Mini Interiors > Dashboards

The Classic Mini’s standard fascia is functional rather than glamorous, a flat steel pressing with a central instrument binnacle, heater controls and a switch panel. Replacing or overlaying it with a veneered or finish-matched dashboard panel is the single most visible cabin upgrade you can make to the car, lifting the whole interior in the time it takes to remove the steering wheel and ten screws. Veneered dashboards have been a popular Classic Mini upgrade since the 1980s, and the modern range covers four finishes (Burr Walnut, Charcoal, Brushed Aluminium and Carbon Fibre) and every clock configuration the original cars were fitted with. Selecting the correct dashboard for your car is a matter of matching three things: the finish you want, the clock configuration of your gauges, and the steering position of your car. Identifying Your Clock Configuration The Classic Mini was fitted with three main instrument arrangements across its production. A 2-clock layout combines the central speedometer with a fuel gauge, this was the standard fitment on the most basic specifications. A 3-clock layout adds a temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge alongside the speedometer for a fuller instrument set, used on Cooper, 1275 GT and the higher-trim saloons. Some cars added auxiliary gauges (water temperature, oil temperature, voltmeter, ammeter, tachometer) on or below the standard binnacle, covered by the 2-clock + 1 aux, 3-clock + 1 aux, 3-clock + 2 aux and 3-clock + 3 aux dashboard variants. Late MPi cars used a revised binnacle with a tachometer integrated into the central pod, covered by the dedicated MPi dashboard versions. Burr Walnut Dashboards Genuine Burr Walnut veneer is the original premium dashboard finish used by countless aftermarket trimmers from the 1970s onwards and remains the most popular choice for the period restoration and the classic English interior. Burr Walnut dashboards are available in 2-clock and 3-clock configurations, with options for 0, 1, 2 or 3 auxiliary gauge apertures, with or without dial rings, in both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive specifications. The central clock 1-piece and 3-piece variants give the option of a single full-width fascia or a centre-pod-only overlay. Dedicated MPi versions are available for the 1997-on cars with the revised binnacle. Charcoal Dashboards Charcoal is the modern matte-finish alternative to Burr Walnut, designed for owners who want a more contemporary look without departing from a traditionally produced wood-veneered substrate. Charcoal is particularly suited to cars with leather seats in dark trim, body-coloured switch panels and the 1990s and later Cooper variants. Charcoal dashboards are available in the same range of clock configurations and steering side specifications as the Burr Walnut range, with or without dial rings, and in dedicated MPi versions for the late cars. Brushed Aluminium Dashboards Brushed Aluminium dashboards give the cabin a competition or modified-Mini appearance and are the popular choice for Cooper-style and modified cars. The brushed finish picks up cabin lighting in a way that veneered dashboards do not, and contrasts well against alloy gear knobs, alloy interior door handles and alloy switch panel finishes. Brushed Aluminium dashboards are available in 2-clock and 3-clock configurations with 0, 1, 2 or 3 aux gauge apertures, with or without dial rings, and in MPi-specific versions including 3-clock with chrome rings for that extra polished look. Brushed Aluminium switch panels match the dashboard for a coordinated cabin. Carbon Fibre Overlay Dashboards Carbon Fibre overlay dashboards are the modern modified-Mini choice, a contemporary motorsport-inspired finish that suits a tuned engine, sports steering wheel and modern bucket seats. Carbon Fibre dashboards are available in 2-clock and 3-clock configurations with the same auxiliary gauge options and dial ring choices as the rest of the range, in RHD and LHD, and in dedicated MPi versions. The carbon fibre weave finish is hand-applied and the depth and consistency of the weave is to a quality suited to a competition cabin. Slim Dash Variants The DR Slim Dash 3-clock RHD version is a low-profile alternative to the standard fascia depth, giving extra knee clearance for taller drivers without losing instrument visibility. The slim dash retains the 3-clock arrangement and is supplied in a finish to suit the rest of the cabin upgrade. Dial Rings, With or Without Each dashboard variant in the range is offered with dial rings or without dial rings. Dial rings are the chrome (or finish-matched) trim rings that sit around each gauge aperture, providing a finished edge to the gauge bezel. With-dial-ring versions give a more period-original appearance and are popular on Burr Walnut and Carbon Fibre fitments where the contrast lifts the gauge cluster visually.
