MG TD & TF Suspension & Steering

Suspension & Steering

Having first gone into production on the Y-Type, The independent front suspension was the same on both TD and TF models. The new design – partly borrowed from the 1934 Cadillac – was a coil and double wishbone layout wish wishbones of unequal lengths. This setup proved so effective that it carried through with very little change until the last MGBs were made in 1980. For the rear, conventional semi-elliptic leaf spring with seven leaves was mounted onto a rubber bushed bearing on the outside of the chassis. As with the front suspension, the rack and pinion system were also carried over from the Y-type. The steering column was telescopically adjustable with a small amount of adjustment for rake. The standard 16 ½” steering wheel had three equally spaced chrome spring spokes with four spring wires paired up. The rim and boss were plastic and usually in mottled brown colour.
